Title: False Memories

Memorizing, imagining false memories & personal significances.

Consciousness & cognition 33, 574-581.

Conway and Loveday discuss the phenomenon of false memories. They define it as individuals recalling something that most likely did not occur.

They believe that people are more likely to recall what they imagine.

People tend to remember what they think.

To highlight the inherent links between an individual’s imagination and his memory, they refer the system known as the remembering imagining systems or RIS.

They then discuss two main themes regarding false memories, the autobiographical and self memory systems.

The autobiographical, episodic and working memories make up the latter.

The working self is also hyper imaginative, and it is more likely to create its own scenarios.

In other words, the working self can create memories that may or may not actually be real.

The authors also discuss memory accuracy.

The authors claim that memories are simply reconstructions from the past. Therefore, all of them are false to a certain extent.

But, memory is the ability to retain information, store it, and then recall it later.

The hypothesis does not deny that memory can be distorted by humans. However, it is not unreasonable to claim that all memories are false.

The article states that with time, the coherence and contents of memories can become blurred or compressed.

Memories are presented by the authors as mental constructs that may understate their value (Conway & Loveday (2015)).

(2013) claim that some individuals may be immune from memory distortion or false memories.

Individuals with high levels of Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM) may be immune from memory distortions.

These authors believe that episodic memories are responsible for inaccurate reconstructions and misrepresentations of past events.

This causes people to remember events that they didn’t actually happen but are still able to recall.

As the authors explain, emotions can also be altered. Emotions are more likely to become distorted if they are rebuilt.

There are some people who are gifted with extraordinary memory and are able recall even the smallest details of what happened in the past.

This condition is called hyperthymesia (HSAM).

These individuals can recall all details about an event or day in detail and are 97% accurate in most cases.

These HSAM subjects were tested alongside controls to see if memory distortions could affect them.

Although the HSAM people were able to recall more distant events, their memory impairments were also evident.

The main point of the article is its ability to disprove the popular belief that people with HSAM will be immune from memory distortions.

The article is based on the word list false memory test.

HSAM, on the other hand, is mainly related to distant events and individuals’ ability to accurately recall such events.

However, the research shows that memory distortions, regardless of whether or not a person has it, are quite common. This is because every memory can be reconstructed so subjective accounts cannot be excluded (Patihis, et al. 2013, 2013).
